Down at the Club revisited
Back in the mid-1990s, the Manchester Institute for Popular Culture (MMU), hosted a series of talks from DJs and others involved in Manchester’s nightclub culture – Down at the Club. This event for the Manchester Histories Festival, will revisit some of the themes discussed at the original series of talks, from the vantage point of 3 decades later. We are delighted that one of the speakers from the original talks, iconic DJ Richard Searling (BEM), will be speaking at the event alongside, other afficionados of Greater Manchester’s club culture heritage. Of particular interest at this event will be a discussion of Manchester’s nightclub histories from the 1960s through to the 1980s, and the Wigan Casino and Twisted Wheel in particular, but with an interest on the impact of these earlier club scenes on contemporary club culture in Manchester and the North West. The event is organised by Dr Katie Milestone and Dr Susan O’Shea from MMU’s Music and Sonic Studies Research Group/School of Sociology and Criminology.
